I had a speedlight in my bag, I had a small diffusion panel, and I still couldn’t figure out why the images felt lifeless. I knew the answer was somewhere in my understanding of light quality, but I couldn’t quite put my finger on the mechanical reason. The One Principle Most Beginners Get Backwards
Most photographers, when they start out, think about light in terms of the physical fixture. Big softbox equals soft light. Small speedlight equals harsh light. That framing is not wrong exactly, but it’s incomplete in a way that will quietly sabotage your work for years if you don’t catch it.
The Visual Education tutorial zeroes in on something more precise: what matters is not the actual size of your light source. What matters is the perceived size of that light source from your subject’s point of view. Those are two very different measurements, and confusing them is the root cause of a lot of flat, unflattering portraits.
Why an Ant and a Speedlight Is Actually a Useful Mental Image
The tutorial uses a memorable example to make this concrete. Imagine an ant standing right next to a speedlight. From the ant’s perspective, that tiny flash unit is enormous. It fills a huge portion of the ant’s visual field. The result? Soft, wrapping, flattering light, at least relative to the ant’s size. Now imagine moving that same speedlight ten feet away. The physical flash hasn’t changed at all. But from the ant’s point of view, it has shrunk dramatically. The light that was once huge relative to the subject is now a tiny pinpoint, and pinpoint light sources produce hard, shadow-heavy, unflattering light.
This is the core rule: as a light source moves farther from your subject, it gets effectively smaller, regardless of its physical size. Closeness creates softness. Distance creates hardness.
How to Use This When You’re Actually Shooting
Here is how this principle translates into practical decisions on a real shoot:

Move your light closer before you spend money. If your portraits have harsh shadows under the nose and chin, your first fix should be closing the distance between your light and your subject, not buying a bigger modifier. Halving the distance dramatically increases perceived light size.

Watch the shadow edges, not just the brightness. Soft light produces shadows with gradual, feathered transitions. Hard light produces shadows with sharp, defined edges. Train yourself to read shadow edges as a diagnostic tool. They tell you exactly what your light is doing.

When shooting with a window, position your subject close to the glass. The window is your softbox. A subject standing one foot from a large window is bathed in beautiful, wrapping light. That same subject standing eight feet back is lit by what has effectively become a much smaller, harder source.

Outdoors on an overcast day, you have a softbox the size of the sky. The clouds scatter sunlight across an enormous surface area, and that entire surface is your light source. The sky isn’t blocking the sun so much as it is enlarging it from your subject’s perspective.

On a clear sunny day, the sun becomes a tiny, harsh point source. The sun is enormous in reality, but it is so far away that its perceived size from a human subject’s point of view is tiny. That is why midday sun on a clear day produces those unflattering under-eye shadows.
Where I’d Push Back, Just Slightly
This principle is foundational and I don’t argue with it. But there is one place I’d add a caveat from my own experience: when you shoot reflective or textured surfaces rather than skin, hard light is not always the enemy. On my travel work, I have shot textured stone walls, wrinkled leather market bags, and weathered wooden boats where hard raking light from a distant source was exactly what I needed. It pulled out every detail and groove in a way that soft, close light would have completely flattened.
So the principle holds universally, but the application is context-specific. Soft, close light flatters people. Hard, distant light reveals texture and surface character. Once you understand why each effect happens, you can choose deliberately instead of hoping you got lucky.
What This Means for Every Light Source You Already Own
The most freeing thing about this concept is that it costs nothing to apply. You do not need a new lens, a new flash, or a new modifier. You need to understand that moving your existing light closer to your subject is one of the highest-leverage adjustments you can make to improve image quality. I shot some of my favorite portraits with a single window and this principle. I have also shot with a phone flash held four inches from someone’s face just to prove to a workshop student that closeness beats gear.
The size of the light only matters relative to the subject experiencing it. Keep that single idea in your head during your next shoot, and watch what changes.
