I spent an entire vacation chasing a waterfall shot. Perfect conditions, good light, a composition I’d scouted for two days. I got home, pulled the images up on my monitor, and found soft, mushy details where I expected crisp edges. I blamed the lens. Then I blamed the light. Then I blamed the waterfall. It took me an embarrassing amount of time to realize the problem was entirely within my control, and entirely preventable.

What I appreciate about his approach is that he’s not talking about gear upgrades or exotic techniques. He’s talking about the settings you’re already using, just possibly using wrong.

Step 1: Check Your Autofocus Mode

Continuous autofocus keeps hunting for movement as long as your shutter button is half-pressed. That’s exactly what you want when you’re shooting wildlife or sports, but for a static subject like a landscape, a building, or a portrait in a studio, it works against you. The camera can drift focus onto a swaying branch or a ripple in the water at the exact moment you fire the shutter.

Switch to single autofocus (labeled AF-S on most cameras, or One-Shot on Canon bodies). You lock focus, confirm it, and the camera holds it until you shoot. It’s a small toggle that makes a significant difference. If you’re not sure where to find it, check your camera’s quick menu or the autofocus section of your main settings.


Step 2: Keep ISO Under Control

It actively softens fine detail in ways that can look almost identical to a focus problem. Mark points this out specifically because it’s easy to miss until you zoom into a 100% crop and see that the texture you expected simply isn’t there.

The effect becomes obvious when you compare a shot at ISO 100 against one at ISO 12,000 or higher on the same subject. The high ISO image might look acceptable at a glance, but under scrutiny the edges go soft and the fine detail gets smeared. Whenever your shooting situation allows it, keep ISO as low as possible and reach for a slower shutter speed or wider aperture before pushing ISO into extreme territory.


Step 3: Match Your Shutter Speed to Your Focal Length

Shooting at 200mm? You need at least 1/200th of a second. Shooting at 16mm? 1/16th is your floor, though 1/30th is a safer practical minimum.

The longer your lens, the more any small hand tremor gets magnified. A tiny shake that would be invisible at 24mm becomes a real problem at 200mm. If you’re shooting handheld and your shutter speed is dipping below that reciprocal threshold, you have three options: raise ISO, open your aperture, or find something to brace against. Image stabilization helps, but it’s not a substitute for understanding the baseline rule.


Step 4: Use a Tripod Correctly (Not Just Present)

A few common mistakes will defeat the whole point of using one. Extending the center column too high turns your tripod into a monopod with a wobbly top section. Setting up on uneven ground without adjusting the legs leaves the whole rig prone to vibration. And using a flimsy tripod with a heavy lens combination is almost as bad as handholding.

When you set up your tripod, keep the center column low or fully retracted if you can. Spread the legs wide for a lower, more stable center of gravity. If you’re on soft ground like sand or mud, press the feet in firmly. These aren’t advanced techniques. They’re just habits that take thirty seconds to build into your setup routine.


Step 5: Use a Remote Shutter Release or Timer

It’s subtle, but at slower shutter speeds or with longer lenses, it shows up in your images as softness. The fix is either a remote shutter release (wired or wireless) or your camera’s built-in self-timer, usually the 2-second option.

The 2-second timer is free and already in your camera. Set it, step back, let the camera settle, and let it fire on its own. It takes a little patience, especially when the light is changing fast, but the improvement in sharpness at slow shutter speeds is real and immediate.


Step 6: Watch Out for Mirror Shock (and Use Mirror Lock-Up)

In DSLR cameras, when you press the shutter, the mirror flips up before the sensor is exposed. That mechanical movement creates a small vibration that can blur your image, especially at shutter speeds in the 1/30th to 1 second range where it overlaps with the exposure itself.

Mirror lock-up solves this by separating the mirror flip from the shutter opening. You press once to flip the mirror, wait for vibration to die down, then press again (or let the timer fire) to take the actual shot. It’s a setting buried in most camera menus under “shooting” or “custom functions.” Mirrorless shooters can skip this one entirely since there’s no mirror, but DSLR users chasing maximum sharpness in low light or with slow exposures should make it a habit.


What I’d Add From My Own Experience

The thing about all six of these issues is that they tend to stack. A slightly too-slow shutter speed on a slightly extended center column with autofocus set to continuous and ISO pushed a little high adds up to a shot that looks like a gear failure but is actually a settings failure. I’ve started running a quick mental checklist before I fire in any situation where sharpness really matters: focus mode, ISO, shutter speed, tripod position, shutter method. It takes about ten seconds and it’s saved a lot of shots.

I’ll also say this: I’ve tested the reciprocal rule against my phone camera and the results hold surprisingly well even there. Sharpness is about physics and technique more than it’s about equipment.


The single most important takeaway here is that soft images are almost always a settings or technique problem, not a gear problem. Before you spend money on a new lens or body, run through these six checkpoints. Odds are excellent that at least one of them is the real culprit.
